Our Staff Love Liscombe Lodge too!

Our staff and their families really do love Liscombe Lodge! We have 5 sister properties in Atlantic Canada and we see a lot of the staff here each year.

The most recent visit was by Jennifer and her beautiful family. Jennifer is an Executive Meeting Manager at the Westin Nova Scotian. Jennifer, her hubby Dave, and their 2 gorgeous children, Kayleigh and Abigail, spent 4 wonderful days at Liscombe as part of their 2 week vacation!

A 2 week vacation may seem common to you, but to them, it certainly isn’t. Working in the hospitality industry means long hours and crazy shifts. 2 days off in a row are reserved only for select positions. Jenn’s husband Dave is a chef and he usually only gets 1 day off a week-if that. Not to mention work days are always longer than 8 hours. The family has not been together for a vacation like this since their last child was born. That was 2 years ago!!

We asked Jenn what her favorite parts of the trip were -she had a few. The best part was being able to spend time together as a family. Not being able to do that is the norm for today’s family. Her other favorite part was not having to leave the property. When planning a trip we always try to fill our days with activities and road trips. Not at Liscombe. You park your car here and you don’t have to move. She loved the fact that there were so many activities on property. She also enjoyed the birds- they are everywhere! Her daughters got binoculars on their scavenger hunt and they used them to look for birds (and bugs). The recreation program was excellent. There was always something for the girls to do. Jeanette took great care of them.

Early Mornings at Liscombe

Next time you stay here, be sure to wake up early and take a walk along the river, or hop into a kayak, canoe, or paddle boat. You may be in for a big surprise. The one thing more peaceful than spending time at a secluded resort is waking up early at that resort. Brianna, one of our staff, was out one morning and saw seals swimming in the river. Absolutely gorgeous! And it was not the first time. The Liscomb River is very close to the ocean therefore a seal is not uncommon. Don’t worry, they won’t be swimming around during the day with people around trying to attack. They are not the friendliest of creatures but they stay away from humans. Not only will you get a chance to see seals playing in the water, you will have a chance to see much more Nova Scotia wildlife. The birds are chirping, the sun is rising, and nature is at its finest. Liscombe Lodge is one of those places you can go not to get away from it all, but to get near what is important in life.

Top 10 Ways to be a Green Hotel Guest

Karen, our General Manager, and the rest of the team here try very hard to be environmentally friendly both personally and professionally. As global warming continues to increase, there is an ever present need to protect the environment. We try to be green and we need you to be a green hotel guest. We can do everything possible to be the greenest hotel in the world but without the assistance of our guests, our efforts will be thwarted. We wanted to make a list of 10 ways to be a green guest.

Here is our  top 10 list of things you can do to be a green hotel guest:

  1. Be sure to turn off the lights, TV, and air conditioner when you leave the room.
  2. Reuse towels and sheets by not having them changed everyday. We know this is obvious- it’s been practiced for years but we wanted to remind you :)
  3. Bring your own reusable mug, water bottle, pen, pencil, recycled notepads, etc.
  4. Take home your opened amenities and leave unopened ones in the room. If you leave opened ones in the room we have to throw them in the garbage.
  5. If you don’t need the brochures and tourist pamphlets, return them for other guests to use.
  6. Recycle your bottles, plastic, etc.
  7. Give us suggestions on how to improve. If we are doing a good job, thank us :)
  8. Walk to nearby attractions rather than taking your car if possible. *We know that the word ‘nearby’ is not normally associated with Liscombe Lodge since we are pretty remote, but you get the point right?
  9. If you having a buffet meal, try to reuse the same plate if you are going for seconds.
  10. When arriving by plane, consider carbon off setting and possibly taking less luggage with you. Do you really need to take 7 pairs of shoes with you? :P

This list is only scratching at the surface of what you can do to be a green guest but we hope this gets you thinking.

Stay tuned for our post on how we are being a green hotel. Please share your feedback and if you can think of more tips for guests and hoteliers, we would love to hear them. Just leave a comment on this post.

Nova Scotia Fall Wine Festival

Gorgeous vineyard tours, delectable wine tastings and perfect pairings are just a few of the activities lined up for Nova Scotia’s 12th annual Fall Wine Festival. If wine does not appeal to you, the  festival has a month of extraordinary culinary events happening throughout the province. The festival starts on September 16 and runs until October 17.

Nova Scotia is home to 11 wineries and some very unique wines. Our cool climate, combined with our diverse soil make for some delicious grape varietals. Over the past 10-15 years, Nova Scotia has been perfecting its wine making techniques to become an internationally recognized wine making region.

There are 4 distinct regions along with numerous others who are working on becoming well respected wineries. The Annapolis Valley, Malagash Peninsula, and LaHave River Valley have been creating fine wine for 25 years. Some of our unique varietals include L’Acadie Blanc, New York muscat, Seyval Blanc, Vidal Blanc, and Chardonnay.

The Malagash Peninsula is the closest wine making region to our Nova Scotia resort. Just a few hours from Liscombe Lodge is Jost, one of the most popular vineyards in the province. Jost is kicking off the wine festival with its annual Charity Wine Stomping event. The grape stomp runs from 12-5PM with musical entertainment from Artful Knave. You can watch for $3.00 or enter a team for $150. October 16 marks Jost’s Harvest Open House.  Here you can see what takes place during a grape harvest and sample some grapes and juice. Music is by Laughing Freeman and tours are offered at 12PM and 3 PM. Admission is free. You can stay with us at Liscombe Lodge and take a day trip to Jost.

For a complete listing of events, visit the Nova Scotia Wine Festivalwebsite. Next time you dine with Nova Scotia restaurants like our Riverside Room, try some of our locally made wine.
